-NEW WEAPON: The Kamikaze Cannon

The shop in BACKFIRE is laid out in a three by three grid but the game only shipped with eight weapons what gives? This update is filling that grid. Presenting the ninth weapon in our exorcist’s arsenal– the Kamikaze Cannon.

This is a low ammo, high damage, screen-clearing weapon which fires a wide blast that can devastate whole groups of enemies at a time. You tap and hold to begin charging the Cannon. The longer you hold the bigger the blast. Using the Cannon requires you be skilled enough to know when you will have the space to charge a good shot.

My favorite use: taking out entire waves of Creepers in the Queen’s nest– even if the little guys deserve much worse.

There she is. Fancy new gun just for you. Want to see it in action? Boot up BACKFIRE and blast away!

Since launch it has been found that many players have have trouble switching between weapons during play. Many complained about accidentally tapping to different weapons when trying to maneuver, especially on devices with a small screen. This meant some players were not engaging with alternative weapons at all, instead sticking to the standard gun through the whole game.

While BACKFIRE is balanced so that you can finish the game with only the standard gun, we feel that multiple weapons are part of the core appeal in any good shooter. The UI changes will bring new control schemes for weapon selection:

Buttons: The weapons in the bottom left but with slightly reduced button size. Feel right at home.

Buttons (AMBI): An ambidextrous version of the standard that puts two weapons in the bottom right and on the bottom left.

Shuffle: Puts left and right buttons in the corners of the screen and lets you switch to the next weapon by tapping one of them.

Hopefully with these options, and the option to tweek HUD opacity, players will be able to see threats coming at them from all directions - and won’t be afraid to break out some new guns to deal with them.

-Health/time bars and ammo counter moved to top left of screen.

One of the goals of this update was to spread the HUD to the corners of the screen and reduce the HUD’s footprint in the bottom left. In BACKFIRE demons come at you from every direction so it’s important that no one edge or corner is blocked up with UI.

-No more ugly paper UI! Launch straight into the machine!

Joel wasn’t happy with the paper menus BACKFIRE launched with. Who can blame him- they were ugly and they didn’t match the aesthetics of the game. Crinkly note paper menus are gone, replaced with menus that fit the arcade theme.

-Grenade launcher is now tap to move, hold to aim, release to fire.

Finally we come to the Grenade Launcher. It seems that a majority of players find the grenade launcher hard to use. Sure it’s fun to spam a bunch of grenades into a boss, tappling like a madman, but using it that way didn’t really fit the theme of the weapon.

New Grenade Launcher works like the Sniper. Hold down and take careful aim so you can place your grenades exactly where you want them. Hopefully this lets you use grenades strategically, preserve precious ammo, and ultimately get to the PURIFIED screen a little smoother.

The other benefit is in escaping from enemies. Since the grenade launcher is not tap to move you can tap like crazy to escape from enemies, without blasting yourself with grenades the second you get away. Horray!

-Fixed bug that disabled user input when weapons ran out of ammo.

This bug sucked. It’s gone now. Double Hooray!!
