Since January, BACKFIRE has sold over 5000 copies. We are overjoyed to see this kind of success from GRYN SQYD’s first title. To celebrate we wanted to give players something special.
BACKFIRE:PURGATORY will be a free expansion to the core game. This is a brand new game mode that packs in a bunch of features that didn’t get implemented in time for release as well as some crazy new stuff Joel’s managed to dream up since launch.
The main goal of PURGATORY is to make BACKFIRE play like an arcade game- rather than just feel like one.
The core focus is on building a high score. Stay close to foes to build a combo, and blast them away to rack up points. When you are done (or, more likely, dead) share your score to the leaderboards so you can see exactly where you stack up against other BACKFIRE players.
In PURGATORY there won’t be persistent upgrades. Each run will wipe your progress back to square one. Each wave you’ll get to pick an upgrade or a weapon from a set of three options. You’ll have to choose wisely and seek synergies that can help maximize your score.
On top of that, you’ll have to pick curses throughout the run. Curses fundamentally alter the way BACKFIRE is played, which can be to your benefit or to your doom. Want more firepower? Try “Glass Canon”: you do more damage but have much lower max HP. “Vampirism” will let you regain HP by dealing damage, but the curse will also drain you health over time.
Don’t worry, PURGATORY is still first and foremost a mobile friendly action experience. The goal is to keep runs short, between ten and twenty minutes, so you can play it wherever you can steal a bit of time.
We hate making promises we can’t keep so we aren't committing to a release date yet. The goal is to have PURGATORY out before summer’s end- but we aren't ruling out pushing release into the fall if that’s what it takes to do it right.
